Designing For All Five Senses:

Whether you are outside in the garden, or inside at a table, experiences become the most memorable when they appeal to all five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste and touch. Simple to say, but to accomplish this requires a deep appreciation of what appeals to these five senses as well as to the particular desires of the client and the ability to work with the client’s own materials, so that the experience is memorable for all concerned.

Take the outside scene:

  • Sight – the view.
  • Smell – the flowers.
  • Sound – the water running in the fountain.
  • Taste – the wine cellar just inside.
  • Touch – the roughness of the stone and the wetness of the water.

Or the table set for a holiday meal:

  • Sight – the richness of the wood and the colors from the greenery, the chandelier and china.
  • Sound – background music from a system that is integrated through the entire house.
  • Smell – the candles.
  • Taste – the meal about to be served, anticipated by the plates, silver and glassware.
  • Touch – the silver and the roughness of the placemats; the glassware; the softness of the flower petals.
