Designing For All Five Senses:
Whether you are outside in the garden, or inside at a table, experiences become the most memorable when they appeal to all five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste and touch. Simple to say, but to accomplish this requires a deep appreciation of what appeals to these five senses as well as to the particular desires of the client and the ability to work with the clients own materials, so that the experience is memorable for all concerned.
Take the outside scene:
- Sight the view.
- Smell the flowers.
- Sound the water running in the fountain.
- Taste the wine cellar just inside.
- Touch the roughness of the stone and the wetness of the water.
Or the table set for a holiday meal:
- Sight the richness of the wood and the colors from the greenery, the chandelier and china.
- Sound background music from a system that is integrated through the entire house.
- Smell the candles.
- Taste the meal about to be served, anticipated by the plates, silver and glassware.
- Touch the silver and the roughness of the placemats; the glassware; the softness of the flower petals.
